In a significant move, authorities in Punjab have decided to charge drug suppliers with culpable homicide in cases of overdose deaths. This decision reflects the state's commitment to combat the drug menace and hold suppliers accountable for their actions.
The Punjab Police, led by Inspector General of Police (HQ) Sukhchain Singh Gill, announced that any drug supplier found responsible for a person's death due to overdose will be charged under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) - culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This legal action will apply to every overdose death, signaling a robust crackdown on drug suppliers.

The legal provision of Section 304 assumes that a person supplying drugs is aware that their actions could lead to someone's death due to overdose. By applying this section, authorities aim to establish accountability and ensure that those responsible face appropriate punishment.
The police emphasized their commitment to thoroughly investigate the role of suppliers in overdose deaths. If preliminary evidence suggests the supplier's involvement, charges under Section 304 will be pursued. This proactive approach aims to deter drug suppliers and hold them responsible for the consequences of their actions.
