Aryna Sabalenka, the US Open women's runner-up, and Novak Djokovic, the men's champion, have both claimed the No. 1 rankings in tennis. This marks Sabalenka's inaugural week as the WTA's top-ranked player, while Djokovic secured his record-extending 390th week atop the ATP rankings. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff, the women's champion, achieved a career-high No. 3 ranking in singles and also ascended to No. 1 in doubles.

Sabalenka's remarkable ascent

Aryna Sabalenka, a 25-year-old Belarusian, becomes the 29th player to claim the women's top spot in rankings since their computerized inception in the 1970s. Her rise to No. 1 comes after an impressive run at the US Open, although she lost to Coco Gauff in the final. This shift displaced Iga Swiatek from the top position, a rank she held since April 2022.

19-year-old Coco Gauff, hailing from Florida, soared in singles rankings, leaping three spots to No. 3. Moreover, she and her partner, Jessica Pegula, jointly climbed to No. 1 in doubles after their quarterfinal appearance at the U.S. Open. Prior to the tournament, they were at No. 6, trailing Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova, who were eliminated in the second round.

Djokovic's historic feat

Novak Djokovic secured his 24th Grand Slam singles title with a victory over Daniil Medvedev at the US Open. This achievement tied him with Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam titles in the professional era. Djokovic, who also holds the record for the longest time spent at No. 1 in tennis, began the U.S. Open as No. 2 but reclaimed the top spot from Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Djokovic in the 2022 final but lost to Medvedev in this year's semifinals.

Several notable ranking shifts occurred, including Holger Rune remaining at No. 4, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev each moving up two places, and Casper Ruud dropping from No. 5 to No. 9. American player Ben Shelton entered the top 20, soaring from No. 47 to No. 19 after reaching the semifinals. The United States now boasts four men in the ATP's top 20, a feat not achieved since January 2011. On the women's side, Marketa Vondrousova rose to a career-best No. 6 after her U.S. Open quarterfinal appearance, while Madison Keys climbed six spots to No. 11 due to her semifinal run.
