Hindi Diwas is celebrated on September 14th every year in India. This special day marks the adoption of Hindi as the official language of the country by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, declared September 14th as Hindi Diwas.

Hindi's importance and reach

Hindi is predominantly spoken in states like Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Punjab. It's also spoken in countries such as Mauritius, Nepal, Fiji, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago. Written in the Devanagri script, Hindi is one of India's 22 scheduled languages and is an official language of the Union Government, alongside English.

Historical significance of Hindi Diwas

After India gained independence, there was a need for an official language to facilitate communication between government departments and connect with the public. The Constituent Assembly recognized this need and officially designated Hindi as India's official language on September 14, 1949. The very first Hindi Diwas was celebrated in 1953. This important step was enshrined in Article 343 of the Indian Constitution.

Prominent figures like Seth Govind Das, Maithili Sharan Gupt, Kaka Kalelkar, and Beohar Rajendra Simha played pivotal roles in advocating for Hindi as the official language. Beohar Rajendra Simha's birthday coincides with Hindi Diwas, making it a special occasion to remember his contributions.
