A spate of home burglaries in Chandigarh has left residents concerned about their safety and the effectiveness of security measures. The latest incident occurred in Sector 8-B, where burglars made off with a substantial amount of gold and diamond jewelry along with ₹75,000 in cash.

The targeted house belongs to Jatinder Jotta Kiwi, who serves as the general manager at Hot Millions in Industrial Area, Phase 3, Mohali. He and his family have lived in Sector 8-B, Chandigarh, for the past 22 years.

Brazen theft during absence

The burglary took place while Jatinder Kiwi and his family were away at their native village in Langeri, Hoshiarpur, Punjab. They had left on a Saturday and returned the following Sunday, only to discover the shocking aftermath of the break-in.

The burglars not only ransacked the entire house but also made off with a significant haul of valuables. This included five chains, eight bangles, two necklace sets, a diamond ring, a pair of diamond earrings, three rings, a chain with a pendant, and ₹75,000 in cash.

Upon discovering the burglary, the family promptly alerted the Police Control Room. Subsequently, the police from the Sector 3 station, along with a forensic team and a dog squad, arrived at the scene to collect crucial evidence, including fingerprints.

Similar incidents raise concerns

This incident adds to a growing list of home burglaries in the city. Similar break-ins were reported in Sectors 20 and 51 between August 21 and 24, with another attempt on August 18 at the home of a retired IAS officer in Sector 11-C. Fortunately, the burglars left empty-handed in the latter case as they found no valuables.

One concerning aspect of these burglaries is the absence of CCTV cameras in the targeted houses, making it challenging for law enforcement to identify the culprits. The police are now seeking surveillance footage from adjacent houses to aid in their investigations.
