Concerns over Trudeau's statements

An American expert, Michael Rubin, has strongly criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's assertion of a "potential link" between Indian government agents and the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Speaking at a panel discussion at the Hudson Institute think-tank, Rubin called Trudeau's statements "shameless and cynical." He urged the United States not to endorse such claims.

Trudeau's remarks led to the expulsion of a senior Indian diplomat by Canada, as he alleged the involvement of "agents of the Indian government" in Nijjar's killing, which took place in Surrey, Canada. India firmly rejected these allegations as "absurd" and "motivated," resulting in reciprocal diplomatic expulsions.

Skepticism about the Khalistani movement

Rubin expressed skepticism about attempts to revive the Khalistani movement and cautioned against legitimizing separatist movements. He emphasized the need for responsible political leadership in both the United States and Canada, highlighting concerns about playing with fire.

Jassee Singh, founder and chairman of Sikhs of America, emphasized that the Khalistani movement does not represent the majority of Sikhs in the US or India. He pointed out that Sikhs in India actively contribute to the nation, including serving in the Indian Army.

Importance of intelligence sharing

Dinsha Mistree, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, stressed the significance of intelligence sharing and expressed concern about escalating tensions if Canada continues to push the narrative. He referred to past incidents, like the attack on India's consulate in San Francisco by Khalistan supporters, highlighting the potential for smaller acts of violence to escalate.
