The district road safety committee in Mohali convened to discuss proposals aimed at improving road safety and traffic management in the area. Chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Viraj Shyamkarn Tidke, the meeting emphasized taking stern actions against traffic violators to ensure public safety.

During the meeting, ADC Tidke urged stakeholders, including the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), and the municipal corporation, to address and rectify the 19 pending black spots in the district promptly. These black spots are locations prone to accidents or traffic violations.

Installation of CCTV cameras

The committee proposed installing an integrated safety and traffic management system comprising CCTV cameras on Airport Road as a trial project. These cameras would help monitor and address issues such as overspeeding, running red lights, mobile phone usage while driving, seat belt and helmet compliance, and drunken driving.

ADC Tidke stressed the importance of increased checks to deter violations related to traffic safety. Key areas of concern include overspeeding, disobeying traffic signals, using mobile phones while driving, ensuring seat belt and helmet usage, and preventing drunken driving.

Tidke also directed the district child protection officer to ensure the implementation of Safe School Vaahan. This initiative emphasizes that school buses must adhere to safety policies, with no tolerance for negligence.

Infrastructure developments

The meeting discussed ongoing infrastructure projects, including the approval of tenders for five proposed roundabouts in the city and the consideration of a cycle track from IISER to Quark City. Additionally, the installation of five traffic lights in Kharar is expected to be completed within the next 15 days as committed by the NHAI.

ADC Tidke encouraged people to assist road accident victims without hesitation. Those who provide help may be recognized as good Samaritans by the state. He assured that the district administration, in collaboration with GMADA and the municipal corporation Mohali, is actively working to address traffic challenges in the city.
