In the Chandigarh tricity area, the love for running marathons has gained significant momentum since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Once sporadic, these marathons are now a regular feature, drawing participants from all walks of life.

As the pandemic hit in 2020, many like Ashok Sharma, a 42-year-old sales executive, found solace and fitness in running. Ashok, who has been running for five years, vividly recalls his achievement of completing an ultra-marathon two years ago. His story is not unique; many individuals turned to running to improve their fitness during lockdowns.

The rise of running clubs

Chandigarh's running culture has flourished post-Covid, with several running clubs forming and organizing regular events. The cooler winter months are expected to see even more marathons. Jai Mangla, operations head and co-founder of Tuffman India, a company organizing multiple events in the tricity, noted a surge in interest, especially among women and children.

While the running trend is encouraging, experts like Dr. Satbir Singh emphasize the importance of safety measures and cardiac tests before engaging in long-distance running, especially for half-marathons and ultra marathons. With an increase in heart-stroke cases among younger individuals, caution is advised.

Modern techniques for recovery

To aid runners in post-marathon recovery, modern techniques such as hyperice technology are employed. This technology includes percussion massage devices and cryotherapy tools, promoting better blood circulation and relaxation in the calves.
