Over 161 million people in five states across India are gearing up for assembly elections next month. The Election Commission of India made this announcement, officially kicking off the 2023 election season leading to the general elections next summer. These elections hold immense significance as they will be the final assembly elections before the 2024 general elections.
Mizoram will kick off the electoral process on November 7, with 40 assembly seats up for grabs. Chhattisgarh, a state with a 90-member assembly, will hold elections in two phases on November 7 and 17. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana are scheduled to go to the polls on November 17, 23, and 30, respectively. The results will be counted on December 3.
These five-state elections are being viewed as a virtual semi-final for the Lok Sabha (general) elections set for April-May next year. They serve as a testing ground for electoral strategies, coalition formations, and leadership decisions. In particular, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh will witness intense contests between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, allowing both national parties to assess their strengths.

These polls are the first significant electoral exercise since 26 opposition parties formed the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) earlier this year. They are a significant challenge for the opposition to fine-tune messaging, coordination, and leadership. Additionally, they come after Bihar conducted a landmark caste survey, potentially influencing electoral narratives and emphasizing caste in the 2024 elections.
The election results will also reflect public sentiment regarding issues like inflation, subsidies, and government assistance. Moreover, the polls come after the historic women's reservation bill, which reserves one-third of seats in legislatures for women, although it won't apply in these elections.
