Despite gloomy skies and drizzling rain, the White House radiated Halloween cheer during the eve of the holiday as President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted a delightful "Hallo-READ!" event, seamlessly blending books and candy.

The event was a unique and joyful experience, with First Lady Jill Biden getting into the Halloween spirit by dressing up as Willow the cat. She encouraged the costumed children attending to enjoy the festivities and indulge in sweet treats.

Storytelling and spooky fun

Jill Biden delighted a group of captivated children by reading "Ten Spooky Pumpkins," a counting book. The event also featured storytelling sessions by prominent figures from the White House, including White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. Jean-Pierre embraced the Halloween theme by dressing as an angel.

The presidential couple warmly welcomed children from local public schools and military families for approximately 90 minutes. They distributed M&M's and Hershey's Kisses with the presidential seal to the costumed kids as they made their way to the White House. First Lady Jill Biden, known for her background in education, also gifted books to the young visitors.

The creative mind behind "Hallo-READ!"

Jill Biden not only played the role of a gracious host but also the creative mind behind the "Hallo-READ!" theme. The event featured decorations inspired by beloved literary characters, ghost stories, and a time dedicated to sharing eerie tales.

Various federal government departments and agencies actively participated in the event, setting up booths on the south grounds filled with chocolate treats and sweets provided by the National Confectioners Association and its affiliated member companies. Scholastic generously donated the books for the event.
