Chennai airport, one of India's busiest, ceased operations on Monday as the runway was submerged due to incessant rains prompted by Cyclone Michaung. The closure affected both arrival and departure operations, with authorities initially suspending activities until 11:30 am. However, a subsequent review extended the shutdown until 11 pm due to severe weather conditions.
Handling around 500 flights daily, Chennai airport faced disruptions, leading to the diversion of 33 flights to the Kempegowda International Airport. The decision to suspend operations was influenced by the approaching cyclonic storm, which is expected to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates sustained winds of 90-100 kph, gusting up to 110 kph, as Cyclone Michaung approaches. Social media circulated videos showing floodwater inundating the Chennai airport runway and streets in various parts of the city. The cyclone's impact has prompted several districts, including Chennai, to close schools, colleges, offices, and banks on Monday and Tuesday.
In response to the adverse weather conditions, Air India and Akasa Air have provided a one-time waiver for rescheduling/cancellation charges, allowing affected passengers to rebook their travel without additional costs.
Airport officials indicated that they would reassess the situation by 8 pm on Monday to determine whether further suspension of operations is necessary. The impending landfall of Cyclone Michaung has raised concerns about continued heavy rainfall and gales in Andhra Pradesh over the next three days, emphasizing the need for preparedness and caution.
