Amidst severe rainfall and waterlogging due to Cyclone Michaung, the Tamil Nadu government declared the closure of all schools and colleges in Chennai on Friday. The city witnessed six rain-related deaths, and power cuts affected several areas in the district. Southern Railways canceled 15 trains due to the intense rainfall and flooding.

Government response and relief efforts in flood-hit Chennai

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducted an aerial survey of waterlogged areas, discussing the situation with Chief Minister MK Stalin. The government approved a ₹561.29 crore urban flood mitigation project for the Chennai Basin, aiming at 'Integrated Urban Flood Management.' Additionally, an early disbursement of the second installment of the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) was allocated, with ₹493.60 crore for Andhra Pradesh and ₹450 crore for Tamil Nadu, recognizing the impact of Cyclone Michaung on both states.
