Political pressure hinders disconnecting services as Power Corporation seeks settlement

Despite the Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) urging defaulting departments, such as Local Bodies and Health and Family Welfare, to clear their bills, the response has been inadequate. Major defaulters also include the Department of Home Affairs and Justice with dues of ₹25.68 crores and the Department of School Education owing ₹12.88 crores. PSPCL officials express difficulties in disconnecting services due to political pressure from local representatives and ministers. The Principal Secretary (Power) Tejvir Singh indicates ongoing efforts to encourage departments to settle outstanding bills through a one-time settlement scheme, offering reduced interest rates. However, the response to the scheme has been limited, with only 27 applications received for ₹8.88 crores. The scheme remains valid until December 26, providing a window for defaulting departments to clear arrears and avoid additional charges.
