As the country witnesses a surge in Covid cases, particularly the JN.1 sub-variant, and with winter increasing the risk of respiratory diseases, experts from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) advise precautionary measures. While there are currently no reported Covid cases in the city, Professor Dr PVM Lakshmi from PGI’s department of community medicine emphasizes the importance of adhering to Covid precautions, including wearing masks, practicing hand hygiene, and adopting proper cough etiquette.

Monitoring the JN.1 Variant

Dr. Lakshmi mentions that they are closely monitoring the JN.1 variant, and although there are no cases reported, preventive measures are being taken. In the event of any mutation posing a threat, preparations are in place to address it.

Senior citizens are urged to prioritize wearing masks in crowded areas. While the variant is not currently considered deadly, individuals experiencing breathing difficulties are advised to consult a doctor promptly for guidance.

Effectiveness of current Covid Treatments

The Union health ministry states that the current treatments for Covid-19 are likely to work against the JN.1 variant. While there is no specific guidance on booster shots, doctors suggest targeted vaccination for individuals with weakened immune systems and the elderly if deemed necessary. The emphasis remains on continued adherence to Covid precautions to mitigate the risk of transmission.
