Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, leader of the Awami League, secured a resounding victory in the general elections, triumphantly reclaiming her seat in parliament from the Gopalganj-3 constituency. The election, marked by sporadic violence and a boycott by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), concluded with Hasina winning a landslide.

Decisive win for Hasina

At 76 years old, Prime Minister Hasina garnered an impressive 249,965 votes, while her closest competitor, M Nizam Uddin Lashkar of the Bangladesh Supreme Party, secured a mere 469 votes, as reported by bdnews24. The Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer of Gopalganj, Kazi Mahbubul Alam, officially announced Hasina's victory.

This marks Hasina's eighth win in the Gopalganj-3 constituency since 1986. Her triumph positions her for a record fourth consecutive term and an overall fifth term as the leader of Bangladesh, a strategically located South Asian nation.

Election landscape and turnout concerns

The Awami League candidates, aligned with Hasina, are leading in most constituencies, consolidating their political dominance in the country. The election, however, saw low voter turnout, with initial estimates suggesting around 40 percent. Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal acknowledged this figure but indicated that it might fluctuate after the final count.
