The Union Ministry of Education has responded to Panjab University's (PU) bid to extend teachers' retirement age from 60 to 65, advising the university to reconsider the proposal with the Punjab government instead of approaching the Centre. The ministry contends that PU's service conditions align with government employees and should adhere to the state's rules.
While Central Service Rules increased the retirement age for teachers to 65 in 2022 for UT administration colleges and Punjab Engineering College (PEC), PU follows its calendar, fixing the retirement age at 60. PU's unique status as a conglomeration between the state and the Centre has led to this disparity, according to Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) President AS Naura.
PU Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig emphasized the university's autonomy, stating that the retirement age agenda was approved by the syndicate, and the regulations committee is currently addressing it. Despite the setback, Vig sees the possibility of resubmitting the proposal if necessary.
PU Senator Gurmeet Singh suggests reinforcing the re-employment scheme as an alternative, allowing teachers to extend their tenure for up to five years. Meanwhile, the matter is entangled in legal proceedings, having reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. While the court dismissed initial petitions, a stay has been issued pending the resolution of subsequent petitions.
