During the Sarkar Vyapaar Milni event on Sunday, Punjab Chief Secretary Anurag Verma unveiled plans to construct 10 new washrooms in various market associations across Ludhiana. The announcement came in response to concerns raised by market associations regarding the inadequate washroom facilities and the poor condition of existing toilets in the city.

Government initiative and community collaboration

Verma disclosed that the government would allocate ₹25 lakh for each washroom initially, with the possibility of additional funds from market associations to enhance facilities later on. He emphasized the importance of market associations maintaining the facilities with their assistance to ensure accessibility for customers and vendors.

Verma stated, “We will transfer these funds through the municipal corporation and ensure that market associations commit to maintaining the facilities. Our aim is to provide easy access to washrooms for customers and market personnel."

MP Mathroo, a member of the Clock Tower Market Association, highlighted the pressing need for washrooms in their area. Despite repeated requests to the municipal corporation, no nearby washrooms were available, causing inconvenience to both shopkeepers and customers.

Baljinder Singh, chairman of the Scooter Seller Market Association, expressed frustration over the poor condition of existing washrooms. Despite informing the municipal corporation about the issues, no action had been taken to address them. Singh stressed the urgency of renovating the washrooms to alleviate the problems faced by the community.

Municipal Corporation's response

MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi assured that the municipal corporation had already identified 10 locations in different markets for the construction of new washrooms and the renovation of existing ones. He affirmed that swift action would be taken to address the concerns and ensure that people do not face any inconvenience.
