Panjab University (PU) has decided to shift its convocation to the evening for the first time in its history. The decision comes as a result of aligning with the schedule of PU Chancellor and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Normally held in the morning, the convocation will now commence at 5:00 pm on Thursday, according to a circular issued by the assistant registrar.

Adjustment for dignitary's schedule

The alteration aims to accommodate Vice-President Dhankhar's schedule, who expressed difficulty attending morning events due to the impending declaration of Lok Sabha elections. This shift follows a precedent set during PU's global alumni meet, also organized in the afternoon to suit Dhankhar's availability.

Officials anticipate smoother proceedings with the revamped timing. Previously, the convocation spanned from morning till evening, including a lunch break. With the new schedule, the function is expected to conclude by around 7:00 pm. Notably, the protocol dictates the presence of chief ministers and governors of Punjab and Haryana, although their attendance remains unconfirmed.

Change in dress code considered

In a recent circular, PU outlined the dress code for the convocation ceremony, omitting any mention of ethnic wear. Earlier deliberations hinted at introducing ethnic attire for select attendees, yet decisions are pending release of committee meeting minutes. The issue was raised in a Senate meeting, highlighting the delay in implementing changes discussed since the previous convocation.

In 2019, the University Grants Commission encouraged universities to embrace traditional attire over gowns for convocations. However, PU's stance on this matter remains uncertain as discussions continue within the university's committees.
