French President Emmanuel Macron is set to visit Prague to discuss France's stance on the Czech Republic's plan to supply weapons to Ukraine. During his one-day visit, Macron will meet with Czech President Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Petr Fiala, and also address a nuclear forum.

Initiative to supply weapons to Ukraine

At a security conference in Munich, Czech President Pavel announced the Czech Republic's plan to procure weapons for Ukraine from sources outside Europe. They have identified significant quantities of ammunition, including 155-millimetre and 122-millimetre shells, which they aim to deliver promptly, pending funding.

Prime Minister Fiala revealed that around 15 nations, including France, are ready to join the initiative. While Macron confirmed France's participation, the specifics of their contribution remain undisclosed. The Czech government expects Macron to announce a concrete pledge during their discussions.

Macron's visit provides an opportunity to discuss the details of the weapons supply initiative and seek clarifications. This visit is significant as France typically prioritizes domestic defense spending and favors European-based weapon production. Macron's recent suggestion of potentially sending soldiers to Ukraine will likely be addressed, clarifying that France's allies largely rejected the idea.

Addressing nuclear forum

Aside from the talks on arming Ukraine, Macron will also address a nuclear forum in Prague. French energy companies, including EDF, Orano, and Framatome, will attend. EDF is one of the bidders in a Czech tender to build new units at nuclear power stations.
