The government of Haryana has proposed creating a protective zone around the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary to safeguard its ecological balance. The sanctuary spans approximately 25.98 square kilometers and is situated in the Shivalik foothills, shared by Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab. Recognized for its diverse flora and fauna, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1988.
The new proposal suggests delineating an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) of 1,000 meters around the sanctuary's Haryana boundary. This ESZ aims to regulate and restrict certain activities to preserve the sanctuary's natural habitat. Previous proposals for a 100-meter zone were revised following directives from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The proposed ESZ is divided into four zones based on distance from the sanctuary's boundary. Activities such as commercial mining, stone quarrying, and industrial pollution will be prohibited. Construction activities will be regulated, with stricter controls closer to the sanctuary. Residents will be allowed limited construction for residential purposes within specified regulations.
The revised proposal includes suggestions from the Wildlife Institute of India to extend the ESZ boundaries to the reserve forest boundary. This recommendation aims to provide additional protection to the sanctuary's ecosystem. The proposal underscores the importance of ESZs in buffering protected areas from adverse impacts of surrounding activities.

The proposal awaits approval from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Once finalized, it will provide a framework for balancing conservation efforts with sustainable development around the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary. The establishment of an ESZ reflects ongoing efforts to preserve India's rich biodiversity and natural heritage.
