Former Indian Administrative Service officer, Brijendra Singh, who served the nation for 21 years, has resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Congress. Singh, who made his electoral debut in 2019, represented Hisar constituency as a BJP MP. He cited "compelling political reasons" for his decision to resign.

Political shift:

Singh's move from the BJP to the Congress comes ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. He expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, for the opportunity to serve as an MP. However, he mentioned dissatisfaction with certain issues, particularly pertaining to farmers and wrestler meetings.

In the presence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and other senior leaders like Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik, Singh officially joined the Congress. He thanked the Congress leadership, including Rahul Gandhi and Deepak Babaria, for welcoming him into the party fold.

Brijendra Singh is the son of veteran BJP leader Chaudhary Birender Singh and the great-grandson of Haryana icon Chhotu Ram. His mother, Prem Lata, was also a BJP MLA in Haryana. Singh won the Hisar constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, defeating opponents from the Jannayak Janta Party and the Congress-aligned candidate.

Why the shift:

Singh's decision to leave the BJP and join the Congress stems from his dissatisfaction with certain issues, notably regarding farmers' concerns and wrestler meetings. Despite his background as an IAS officer and his initial success in electoral politics, Singh felt compelled to align himself with the Congress party due to what he perceived as a better fit for addressing these concerns.
