India celebrated a significant achievement as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the maiden flight test of the indigenous Agni-5 missile. Led by DRDO missile specialist Sheena Rani, the project showcased India's capability to deploy multiple warheads, marking a significant milestone in the nation's defence capabilities.

Key role in Missile development

Sheena Rani, as the programme director at DRDO's Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) in Hyderabad, played a crucial role in developing the Agni-5 missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. This technology allows the missile to carry multiple warheads, significantly enhancing its destructive potential.

Sheena Rani holds a degree in electronics and communications engineering and specialized knowledge in computer science. She gained eight years of experience at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) before transitioning to DRDO in 1999. Inspired by former DRDO chief APJ Abdul Kalam, she has been actively involved in the Agni missile program since the Pokhran-II nuclear tests.

Achievements and recognition

Throughout her career, Sheena Rani has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious "Scientist of the Year" award in 2016. Her dedication and expertise have been instrumental in advancing India's missile technology and strengthening the nation's defence capabilities.

Sheena Rani's husband, PSRS Sastry, is also associated with DRDO and has contributed to missile projects. His involvement in the development of the Kautilya Satellite, dedicated to gathering electronic intelligence, reflects the family's commitment to advancing India's defence capabilities.

Overall, Sheena Rani's leadership and expertise in missile technology have played a pivotal role in India's successful test of the Agni-5 missile with MIRV capabilities, showcasing the nation's advancement in defence technology on the global stage.
