Haryana's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Anurag Agarwal, has introduced a unique initiative to boost voter turnout for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on May 25. The initiative encourages families to participate in the electoral process and rewards them for doing so.

Selfie Contest to promote voting

Under this initiative, families are encouraged to upload selfies after casting their votes. The CEO announced cash prizes at the district level, with ₹10,000 for the first prize, ₹5,000 for the second, and ₹2,500 for the third. A draw of lots will determine the winners. Additionally, schools can participate by uploading selfies taken by their students, with the school uploading the most selfies receiving a special prize of ₹25,000.

A designated link on the official website of the CEO of Haryana has been created for uploading selfies. This link will be active on May 25, the day of voting, from 7 am to 8 pm. The initiative aims not only to increase voter turnout but also to raise awareness among school children about their voting rights.

Efforts to promote Election participation

To further promote voter participation, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced the slogan "Chunav Ka Parv-Desh Ka Garv" (Festival of Elections, Pride of the Nation). In Haryana, the slogan "Chunav Mela Dekhan Jawange, Sare Vote Dalke Aawange" (We will witness the Election Fair, and we will all come out and vote) is being used to create awareness among voters.

In recognition of the challenges faced by polling and security personnel during election duty, the ECI provides financial assistance (ex-gratia) to their families in case of death or permanent disability. The amount varies depending on the circumstances, ranging from ₹7.5 lakh for loss of eyesight or limbs to ₹30 lakh for death due to violent incidents or attacks.

The CEO chaired a review meeting to discuss the ex-gratia policy for employees engaged in election duty. The financial assistance provided by the ECI is in addition to any support offered by the central or state government or other employers.

Through these initiatives, Haryana aims to not only increase voter turnout but also to acknowledge the dedication and sacrifices of those involved in the electoral process. Encouraging voter participation is crucial for maintaining the integrity and fairness of elections in the state.
