Amid a downturn in bilateral relations between India and the Maldives, the Maldivian government expressed gratitude towards India for extending vital budgetary support. Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer thanked Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and the Indian government for their gesture of goodwill, which comes in the form of a rollover of a $50 million Treasury Bill.

Significance of the support

The $50 million Treasury Bill, facilitated through the State Bank of India, Male’, is an essential lifeline for the Maldives, symbolizing the enduring friendship between the two nations. This support is especially significant given the recent strains in bilateral relations following the assumption of the presidency by pro-China Mohammed Muizzu.

The Maldives government emphasized its appreciation for the generous support provided by India, which includes a mix of grant assistance and infrastructural developmental projects. Despite recent tensions, both countries express a commitment to continuing their collaborative partnership for the mutual benefit and prosperity of their people.

Last week, tensions between India and the Maldives escalated as the Maldivian government insisted on the withdrawal of Indian military personnel operating military platforms in the island nation. However, this situation saw a resolution with the replacement of 76 Indian military personnel by civilian employees of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the manufacturer of two helicopters gifted by India. This move signifies a shift from military to civilian presence, ending the uncertainty surrounding the repatriation of Indian personnel.

Long-standing friendship

Despite recent challenges, the relationship between India and the Maldives remains rooted in historical ties and shared interests. Both nations recognize the importance of maintaining stable and cooperative relations for regional peace and prosperity.
