With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on the lookout for a new head coach for the Indian cricket team during the T20 World Cup season, several names have emerged as potential successors to Rahul Dravid. Among them, former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming stands out, currently coaching the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

Candidates in the spotlight

Fleming, known for his successful stint with CSK since 2009, is seen as a "suitable candidate" for the role, according to reports. However, it's noted that his availability hinges on his willingness to leave CSK, where he enjoys a long-standing association. If he decides to throw his hat into the ring, Fleming would need to commit to a demanding schedule, potentially coaching the Indian national team for ten months annually.

National Cricket Academy (NCA) head VVS Laxman is also seen as a strong contender for the position. Laxman has been overseeing the NCA for the past three years and has even served as interim head coach during Dravid's absence. Under Laxman's guidance, India has participated in various tournaments and bilateral series, showcasing his leadership potential.

Australian cricketer-turned-coach Justin Langer has also entered the conversation. Langer, having experienced the challenges of coaching in India during his tenure with the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024, acknowledges the demanding nature of the role. Notably, since the departure of Duncan Fletcher in 2014, India has had a succession of Indian coaches, including Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri, and Rahul Dravid.

As discussions continue and speculation swirls, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the announcement of India's next head coach.
