Cyclone Remal, the first major cyclone of the year, caused heavy rainfall in Mizoram, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. The storm has claimed at least 54 lives so far. In Mizoram, 27 people died due to landslides and heavy rain, as confirmed by the Department of Information and Public Relations. In Bengal, 8 people died, while 10 fatalities were reported in Bangladesh.
In Meghalaya, two people lost their lives, and more than 500 were injured in rain-related incidents. Landslides occurred on the Shillong-Mawlai bypass and at Bivar Road in Oakland, while flash floods hit several areas, including Langkyrding and Polo. In Assam, three people died and 17 were injured due to heavy rain and strong winds. The Assam CM has urged people to stay indoors and has issued various alerts, including a red alert for several districts, with schools closed until May 29.

Nagaland reported at least four deaths and damage to more than 40 houses. A boy drowned in Laruri village, two people drowned at Doyang Dam, and an elderly man died in Phek district. The state saw extensive damage to properties, and rescue operations are underway with the help of NDRF personnel. In Tripura, the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert and recorded significant rainfall. A cemetery wall collapsed in Baishgharia, killing livestock and damaging a house.
In Manipur, heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, especially in Kakwa, Imphal West district. A mudslide near Sinam village swept a truck into a gorge, but no deaths or injuries were reported. All schools in Manipur will remain closed for three days starting May 29 due to the bad weather.
