Himachal Pradesh's hill stations, known for their cool climate, are experiencing unusually high temperatures. The plains across the state are facing a severe heatwave, causing daytime temperatures to soar. Hill towns like Shimla, Dharamshala, and Manali are also reporting higher-than-normal temperatures. In Shimla, the temperature hit a season high of 30.6°C on Sunday and remained high at 30.4°C on Tuesday. Other areas like Dalhousie, Chamba, Dharamshala, and Kullu are also experiencing unusually high temperatures.

Tourists from north India are flocking to these hill stations to escape the heat. Shimla and its surroundings have seen a rise in visitors, with hotel occupancy reaching 70%. Tourist arrivals, which typically peak in June, increased significantly in mid-May due to the heatwave.

Water shortages

The heatwave has also led to water shortages in several areas. Regions like Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Una are particularly affected. The Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam has started rationing water to manage the scarcity.

Low-lying areas in the state, including Kangra, Hamirpur, Mandi, Solan, and Sirmaur districts, are experiencing extreme heat. Una recorded the highest temperature at 44.4°C, while Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti was the coolest at 7.1°C. Local authorities have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and use hats and sunscreen when outdoors. The state government has also issued advisories to help people cope with the heat.

The heatwave is expected to continue for the next four days, according to the meteorological department. This prolonged heat is impacting agricultural activities, with farmers worried about crop damage. The state government is monitoring the situation and plans to support those affected by the extreme weather.
