Starting Monday, June 3, the price of Amul milk will go up by ₹2 per litre across all variants. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets Amul products, stated that this price hike is due to increased operational and production costs.

Reasons for the price hike

Jayen Mehta, MD of GCMMF, explained that the increase is necessary to compensate farmers for their higher production costs. With the new prices, 500 ml of Amul buffalo milk will cost ₹36, 500 ml of Amul Gold milk will be ₹33, and 500 ml of Amul Shakti milk will be ₹30. This marks the first price increase since February 2023.

The price hike translates to a 3-4% increase in the maximum retail price (MRP), which is lower than the average food inflation rate. GCMMF emphasized that Amul has kept fresh milk prices stable since February 2023 in major markets, despite rising costs.

Benefits for farmers

GCMMF noted that about 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products is passed on to milk producers. The price revision aims to maintain fair prices for farmers and encourage higher milk production. The increase in milk prices will help support the livelihoods of farmers and ensure sustainable milk production.

In conclusion, Amul's decision to raise milk prices by ₹2 per litre from June 3 is driven by the need to cover higher operational and production costs and to support farmers. Despite the hike, the increase remains below the average food inflation rate, reflecting Amul's commitment to balancing consumer interests and farmer welfare.
