Aamir Khan's son, Junaid Khan, was set to make his film debut with "Maharaj," directed by Siddharth P Malhotra. However, the Gujarat High Court has stopped the film's release. According to India Today, a Hindu group filed a plea claiming that the movie could incite violence. The film also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and is based on the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862.
The plea was filed by devotees of Lord Krishna and followers of Vallabhacharya from the Pushtimarg sect. They argued that the film could disrupt public order and provoke violence against their community. The Maharaj Libel Case of 1862 involved allegations of misconduct by a prominent figure and included remarks against Lord Krishna and devotional hymns, which the petitioners found blasphemous.
The petition also noted that the film was planned to be released without sufficient promotional material, like a trailer, limiting public access to the story and potentially hurting sentiments. Justice Sangeeta Vishen of the Gujarat High Court issued an interim order to halt the movie's release and scheduled a hearing for June 18.
The film "Maharaj" is set in 1862, during a time when there were only three universities in India and the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 was still influencing the fight for independence. The story revolves around Karsandas Mulji, a journalist and social reformer who was an advocate for women's rights and social reform. He was a student at Elphinstone College in Mumbai and a protégé of scholar-leader Dadabhai Naoroji. Mulji's writings on widow remarriage and social oppression led to the landmark Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, a significant legal battle over allegations of misconduct by a prominent figure.
As the film's release date approached, social media saw hashtags like "Boycott Netflix" and "Ban Maharaj Film" trending on X. The film's historical and controversial subject matter has drawn significant attention and scrutiny.
