The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several northern states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, and Jharkhand, due to severe heatwave conditions. This heatwave has been affecting the region since March 1. In Delhi, the temperature reached 44 degrees Celsius on Monday and is expected to rise further in the coming days. The IMD warned that these severe heatwave conditions will continue in Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh until June 19.
While northern India is facing extreme heat, the northeastern states are experiencing heavy rainfall. The IMD has forecast continuous rainfall in Guwahati for the week. Heavy rains in Sikkim have caused landslides and floods, resulting in one death and several injuries. The IMD also issued a rainfall alert for Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 3-5 days. Similar weather is expected in Arunachal Pradesh until June 20, and in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from June 16-20.
IMD scientist Soma Sen reported that an orange alert for thunderstorms has been issued for parts of Madhya Pradesh. The region is expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 20 cm, in areas such as Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur over the next few days. In response to the severe weather, evacuations began in Sikkim's Mangan district, where heavy rains had triggered landslides. Officials have started evacuating tourists stranded in Toong, with nearly a dozen tourists rescued by Monday noon.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay informed and take precautions to stay safe during these extreme weather conditions.
