Starting September 15, pilgrims embarking on the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra can once again experience the awe-inspiring view of the sacred Kailash peak in Tibet from the old Lipulekh pass, situated at an altitude of 18,300 feet within Indian territory. This historic reopening comes after the route was closed in 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, marking a significant moment for spiritual pilgrims and travelers alike.
According to Kirti Chandra Arya, the District Tourism Officer of Pithoragarh, the old Lipulekh pass, nestled in the Vyas valley of Pithoragarh district, will open for common pilgrims from September 15. Pilgrims will be able to reach Lipulekh from Dharchula in their vehicles, with a short 800-meter trek on foot required to reach the vantage point for viewing the Kailash peak.

Arya emphasized that this reopening allows pilgrims to view both the Kailash peak and Om Parvat from within Indian territory in a single trip, providing a hassle-free experience. The route through the Lipulekh pass remains closed on the Chinese side, underscoring the unique opportunity for pilgrims to access this spiritual site from the Indian side without international travel complications.
Administrative approval and preparation
Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj and his wife Amrita Rawat recently visited the old Lipulekh pass on June 22, where they also viewed the majestic Kailash peak. The Centre has granted approval to the Uttarakhand Tourism Department to facilitate tourist activities at Lipulekh, with the department currently finalizing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the pilgrimage.
