Alfredo's Cafe in Scranton, Pennsylvania, found itself in a legal dispute after customer Eric Smith left an astonishing $3,000 tip on a $13.25 meal back in June 2022. The gesture, initially received with gratitude by waitress Mariana Lambert, turned into a complicated ordeal for the restaurant.

The unexpected tip and legal challenges

When Smith left the hefty tip, marked with ‘Tips for Jesus’ on the check, Lambert was deeply moved. However, to verify the authenticity of the tip, restaurant manager Matt Martini sought confirmation from Smith and even collected additional identification. Smith confirmed that the tip was intentional, inspired by a social media trend celebrating generosity.

However, weeks later, Alfredo's received notice that Smith was disputing the charge for the tip, leading to confusion and disappointment among the staff. Despite already giving Lambert the $3,000, the restaurant had to reimburse Smith from its own funds. Efforts to reach an agreement with Smith failed, prompting Alfredo's to escalate the matter by filing a civil lawsuit.

Community support and fundraising efforts

In response to the financial setback faced by Alfredo's, community members rallied support by launching a GoFundMe campaign. However, the fundraiser was discontinued after the restaurant declined to accept the raised funds, opting instead to pursue legal recourse.

Zachary Jacobson, a cafe worker, expressed disappointment over the turn of events, highlighting the initial hope that Smith's gesture would positively impact the establishment. The lawsuit underscores the complexities involved in large tips and the legal responsibilities of both patrons and businesses.
