Amritpal Singh, a controversial activist from the Waris Punjab De group, has been in Dibrugarh Central Jail since April last year under the National Security Act. On Friday, his father, Tarsem Singh, said that people want Amritpal to be permanently released from prison. Recently elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, Amritpal is being brought to Delhi for his swearing-in ceremony.
Amritpal, who won as an Independent candidate from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib constituency by 1.97 lakh votes, is currently on a four-day parole for his oath-taking. His father mentioned that he met Amritpal on June 8 after the election and noted that people love him and want him released so he can fulfill his responsibilities as an MP.

The parole order, which includes ten conditions, states that Amritpal or his relatives cannot make any public statements during his stay in New Delhi. During the ceremony, he will be allowed to meet his family but cannot leave New Delhi. He is also prohibited from engaging in activities that could threaten national security. The parole period includes travel time between Dibrugarh and New Delhi.
According to the order, Amritpal and his relatives are not allowed to record or circulate any statements. This restriction ensures that no statements are made that could affect national security or cause public unrest.
In June, Amritpal's parents, Tarsem Singh and Balwinder Kaur, and his wife, Kirandeep Kaur, met him in jail. The government has taken these steps to ensure that Amritpal’s temporary release is strictly monitored and controlled.
