Mirabai Chanu, the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, is gearing up for the Paris Olympics despite recent challenges. She’s been battling fatigue and injuries but remains dedicated to her training. Chanu’s coach, Vijay Sharma, is central to her success. “Whatever I am today is because of him,” she says, emphasizing his vital role in her career.
Sharma, who started coaching Chanu ten years ago, recalls his early days with her. At that time, he was new to coaching female athletes and unsure of his methods. But Chanu’s determination stood out. Despite setbacks, including a disappointing performance at the Rio Olympics, Chanu’s trust in Sharma never wavered. “I believed in him. I could see his sacrifices and devotion,” she says.
Sharma’s approach to weightlifting involves more than just physical training. He carefully plans each competition and closely monitors Chanu’s progress. Their communication is often non-verbal during competitions, with eye contact being enough to convey instructions. Sharma’s meticulous planning and Chanu’s hard work have led to significant achievements, including Chanu’s gold medal at the 2017 World Championships.

Their bond extends beyond the gym. Sharma has been in touch with Chanu’s family, especially during times of crisis. Chanu has visited Sharma’s home and cooked for him, strengthening their relationship. “I enjoy a meal of dal-chawal the most,” says Sharma.
As the Paris Olympics approach, Chanu, who is not currently among the top favorites, remains hopeful. Sharma believes in her potential despite the challenges. “We’ve fallen so many times that now there’s no fear,” he says, confident that if Chanu’s body holds up, she might achieve something special.
