A bridge in Shangluo, Shaanxi province, collapsed on Friday night due to heavy rain and flash floods, resulting in eleven deaths, according to state news agency Xinhua. The collapse occurred around 8:40 pm local time (1240 GMT) and was attributed to a sudden downpour and resulting floods.
Rescue teams are working to recover vehicles and other items from the water. By Saturday morning, five vehicles had been retrieved. Images from state television showed part of the bridge submerged, with fast-moving water flowing over it.
The area has been heavily affected by intense rainfall since Tuesday, causing flooding and damage across northern and central China. On Friday, reports indicated that five people had already died and eight were missing due to floods and mudslides in Baoji city, also in Shaanxi.
China is experiencing extreme weather this summer, with heavy rains in the east and south and severe heatwaves in the north.
