The Election Commission of India (ECI) has claimed that a false campaign is being run to discredit the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The ECI said that unfounded attempts are being made to compare the approximate voter turnout at 7 PM on the polling day with the final turnout, which is available the day after polling ends.
In a statement posted on X, the ECI explained that these attempts aim to discredit the largest elections ever held in history, conducted in a transparent manner involving candidates and stakeholders at every stage. The poll body emphasized that the approximate turnout figure at 7 PM includes voters still in line, whereas the final turnout is compiled after all votes are counted.
The ECI also addressed concerns raised by a citizens' platform, Vote for Democracy (VFD) Maharashtra, which reported discrepancies between the votes polled and counted and a significant unexplained increase in turnout percentages. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit urged the ECI to address these doubts during a press conference.

The ECI clarified that the proper way to challenge an election outcome is through an Election Petition under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The commission noted that fewer Election Petitions were filed in the 2024 general elections compared to 2019, indicating a decrease in the number of formal complaints.
To ensure transparency, the ECI has released technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to verify the functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in elections. This move aims to address concerns about the voting process and maintain public trust in the electoral system.
