Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi praised wrestler Vinesh Phogat after her historic semi-final win at the Paris Olympics. Phogat became the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic final in wrestling by defeating Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman 5-0. She also beat Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan, handing the Japanese wrestler her first defeat in 82 international matches.

Reacting to Phogat's achievement, Rahul Gandhi wrote on social media platform X that the entire country is emotional along with the wrestler. He emphasized that true champions give their answers on the field, a clear reference to Phogat's recent triumphs.

Response to critics

Gandhi also mentioned those who doubted Phogat and her fellow wrestlers, saying they have received a clear answer through Phogat's victories. "After defeating three top wrestlers in a single day, the whole country is emotional along with Vinesh," he wrote. He added that the system of power that caused her pain is now shattered in front of India's brave daughter.

Gandhi wished Phogat well for the final, stating that the echo of her success in Paris is being clearly heard in Delhi. He noted that this victory is a powerful response to those who questioned the wrestlers' intentions and abilities.

Wrestlers' protest

In 2023, female wrestlers, including Phogat, protested against the then Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment. Singh, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has held the WFI chief position since 2012. Top wrestlers like Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya criticized Singh's leadership, calling it dictatorial.

Wrestlers such as Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat staged long demonstrations in Delhi, demanding action against Singh. In May, Delhi Police detained the wrestlers during a march to the new Parliament building. The wrestlers later considered throwing their medals into the Ganges but were stopped by farmers' leader Naresh Tikait.

On July 11, a Delhi court directed the start of the trial against Singh, framing charges of sexual harassment and intimidation. Singh has pleaded not guilty.

Rahul Gandhi's comments highlight Phogat's resilience and determination, showing that she continues to fight both on and off the field.
