Algerian boxer Imane Khelif recently found herself at the center of a gender controversy during the Paris Olympics. Despite winning gold in the women’s 66kg boxing category by defeating China’s Yang Liu, her victory was overshadowed by a heated debate about her gender. The controversy began when Italian boxer Angela Carini abandoned her match against Khelif within 46 seconds. This incident triggered a wave of transphobic remarks on social media, with many questioning Khelif’s gender based on her appearance and an alleged failed gender test.
Khelif became the target of intense online trolling, with many users claiming she “looked like a male.” However, the boxer chose to respond in her own way by sharing a transformation video that quickly went viral.

In the viral video, Khelif collaborated with Beauty Code to reveal a more traditionally “feminine” look. Her usual pulled-back hairstyle was replaced with a stylish blow-dry, and she was seen wearing earrings, a pink blouse, and makeup. The video, which she posted on Instagram, has amassed 20 million views. It was also reposted on X (formerly Twitter), where it gained another 11 million views and countless comments.
While some viewers appreciated her makeover, others continued to criticize her, calling her transformation “performative” and questioning her gender. Comments like “All I see is a man with makeup” highlighted the ongoing prejudice and misunderstanding surrounding gender identity.
Despite the negativity, Khelif remains firm in her identity. After her Olympic win, she emotionally stated, “I want to tell the entire world that I am a female, and I will remain a female.” Khelif has also taken legal action against those spreading hate, including prominent figures like Elon Musk and JK Rowling, who made harmful comments about her online.
