At least 10 people, including a baby, drowned when a boat carrying migrants overturned while crossing the Drina River from Serbia to Bosnia. The boat was transporting migrants from the Middle East who were trying to reach Western Europe. Serbian authorities received a distress call early in the morning from Bosnian police and a local citizen reporting the tragic incident.

Migrant journey turns deadly

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed that 18 people, including three children, managed to cross into Bosnia. However, the number of victims quickly rose to 10, with reports suggesting there could have been more migrants onboard when the boat capsized. Among the deceased was a nine-month-old baby, found with its mother, whose body was recovered earlier in the day. Rescue teams continue to search the Drina River and nearby areas for more victims.

Desperate routes for a better life

Migrants traveling the Balkan route often enter Serbia from Bulgaria or North Macedonia, aiming to reach wealthier European countries through Hungary, Croatia, or Bosnia. Fleeing conflict and poverty, these migrants rely on people smugglers to cross borders illegally, risking their lives in dangerous journeys. Out of the survivors, 16 are from Syria, and two are from Egypt, with 10 of them being minors. Despite differing reports on the exact number of people on the boat, the tragic loss of life highlights the risks faced by those seeking safety and a better future in Europe.
