Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will have his bail pleas reviewed by the Supreme Court on Thursday. He is challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the excise policy case. The Delhi High Court recently extended his judicial custody until September 11, and Kejriwal plans to appeal against this decision.
Kejriwal was first arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, 2024. After his initial arrest, the CBI took him into custody on June 26, 2024, and he was placed in judicial custody on June 29. Although he was granted interim bail on May 10 to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections, he had to surrender again to Tihar officials on June 2.
On August 16, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed confidence that Kejriwal would come out of jail stronger, claiming there was no solid evidence against him or his party leaders. The CBI has alleged that Kejriwal promised ₹90 lakh to each candidate in Goa, using funds from the excise policy scam for AAP's campaign.
