Two Meitei hostages were released on Thursday after the authorities in Manipur agreed to a key demand from Kuki groups. The Kuki militants had asked for the transfer of 11 prisoners from Sajiwa Central Jail, located in the Meitei-dominated area of Imphal, to Churachandpur Jail. The militants had abducted three Meitei men on Friday, releasing one the next day and holding the other two.
After five days of tense negotiations, the two hostages were safely released. The Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), a Kuki organization, helped secure their freedom. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed his gratitude to both state and central government officials for their efforts in ensuring the safe return of the hostages. They were handed over to the Kangpokpi police in the early morning and were confirmed to be unharmed.

Violence between the majority Meitei community and the tribal Kuki groups has been ongoing in Manipur since May 2023. This conflict has led to widespread tension and protests across the state. In response to the hostage situation, a 48-hour shutdown was called, which disrupted daily life, closing businesses and schools in the capital, Imphal. The shutdown was extended statewide, causing further disruptions. The situation remains fragile as efforts continue to bring peace to the region.
