Indian foreign minister S. Jaishankar visited Colombo, marking the first high-level meeting since Sri Lanka’s new President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, of the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, took office. Jaishankar offered to convert a $20 million credit line into a grant for Sri Lanka as part of India's development assistance. During his visit, Jaishankar met with President Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and foreign minister Vijitha Herath, among others. He also invited Dissanayake to visit India and emphasized India’s commitment to strengthening ties through ongoing projects.

Jaishankar discussed several important topics, including energy production, LNG supply, solar power, and tourism. He highlighted India's support for Sri Lanka’s economic stability and promised to continue assisting with key projects, such as modernizing the Kankesanthurai port. Sri Lanka’s president appreciated India’s help and suggested exporting renewable energy to India. Talks also focused on security and defence, reaffirming the close ties between the two countries. Jaishankar also advocated for the release of Indian fishermen detained in Sri Lanka, emphasizing a humanitarian approach.
Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s support for Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority and urged the implementation of the 13th Amendment for peace and reconciliation.
