Varun Dhawan recently shared that Aditya Chopra turned down his request to star in an action film due to budget concerns. The actor will soon appear in the upcoming spy thriller web series Citadel: Honey Bunny.
At the trailer launch for Citadel: Honey Bunny in Mumbai, Varun talked about his desire to work on action films. He mentioned asking Aditya Chopra, the chairman of Yash Raj Films, why he didn’t cast younger actors in action roles. Aditya replied that he preferred to give Varun acting roles instead of action ones. When Varun pressed further, Aditya explained that he couldn’t offer him an action film because the budget wasn’t feasible at that moment.

Curious about what the budget would be, Varun asked Aditya for a specific figure. Aditya informed him that a significant budget was necessary to produce a quality action film. This experience made Varun think deeply about the requirements for big-budget action films.
When he got the opportunity to work on Citadel: Honey Bunny, he asked the creators, Raj and DK, as well as Amazon, about the budget for the project. His earlier conversation with Aditya had given him insight into what it takes to make an action film look impressive. Varun expressed gratitude to the team for providing the necessary resources to make the action sequences feel grand and for making the characters larger than life.
In Citadel: Honey Bunny, Varun plays a spy named Bunny alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who portrays another spy, Honey. This series is a prequel spin-off to the original Citadel, which starred Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden. The show also features actors like Kay Kay Menon, Simran Bagga, and Saqib Saleem in important roles.
