Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will take the oath of office on November 11, 2024, following the retirement of the current CJI, DY Chandrachud, on November 10. Justice Khanna will serve as CJI for a little over six months until his retirement on May 13, 2025.
The announcement was made by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who shared the news on X, stating that the President appointed Justice Khanna after consulting the current CJI. Earlier this month, CJI Chandrachud had recommended Justice Khanna’s name as his successor.

Justice Khanna started his legal career in 1983 as an advocate. He practiced at the Tis Hazari district courts, the Delhi High Court, and various tribunals. In 2005, he was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court and became a permanent judge in 2006. On January 18, 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India.
