The Delhi High Court has sentenced a lawyer to four months in jail for criminal contempt, accusing him of using disrespectful language and undermining the court’s authority. Justices Pratibha M Singh and Amit Sharma noted that the lawyer’s comments against judges were highly inappropriate. His actions, they said, aimed to damage the reputation of the judiciary and showed no respect for the legal system. The court highlighted that the lawyer didn’t apologize for his behavior, which added to his contempt.

The lawyer was found guilty of filing numerous complaints—around 30-40—against judges and police officers, which the court saw as an attempt to discredit the judiciary. His continued accusations and remarks were viewed as a personal campaign to undermine court authority. The bench pointed out that his derogatory comments during online court sessions were part of a “vilification campaign” against the judiciary.

Court’s action on contempt

In May, a judge initiated the contempt proceedings after the lawyer posted offensive remarks about judges and used the chat feature during virtual hearings to share disrespectful comments. The court found these actions to be an abuse of his position as a lawyer, intended to settle personal disputes rather than pursue justice. Concluding that his language and behavior should not go unpunished, the court imposed a ₹2,000 fine and instructed the police to take him into custody to serve his sentence.
