The third edition of the India-Australia joint military exercise, 'AUSTRAHIND,' commenced in Pune, focusing on enhancing collaboration in joint sub-conventional operations under Chapter VII of the UN mandate. The exercise, which began on Friday, aims to bolster military cooperation between the two nations, promoting operational readiness in semi-urban and semi-desert environments. Set to continue until November 21 at the Foreign Training Node in Pune, this annual exercise alternates between India and Australia, with the last edition held in Australia in December 2023.

Combat conditioning and tactical training phases

'AUSTRAHIND' 2024 will unfold in two primary phases: combat conditioning and tactical training, followed by a validation exercise. Key areas of focus include counter-terrorism operations, such as securing territories from adversaries, establishing joint operations centers, and conducting search-and-destroy missions. The Indian contingent, primarily composed of a battalion from the Dogra Regiment along with 14 Air Force personnel, will work closely with 120 Australian soldiers from the 13th Light Horse Regiment of the 10th Brigade.

The exercise will test the physical endurance of participants and incorporate advanced tactical drills involving drones, counter-drone strategies, heli-borne operations, and the securing of helipads for high-stakes scenarios. By sharing their best practices in these operations, both sides aim to refine each other's tactics, techniques, and procedures.

Enhancing interoperability and fostering camaraderie

In addition to operational objectives, 'AUSTRAHIND' fosters a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect between the Indian and Australian forces. The exercise includes collaborative planning sessions, shared tactical drills, and the development of physical and operational competencies. This joint exercise underscores the commitment of both nations to peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region and sets the stage for further defense collaboration.

With the conclusion of 'AUSTRAHIND,' both militaries will have deepened their understanding of joint operations, strengthened interoperability, and cultivated enduring bonds between personnel. This growing partnership highlights the dedication of India and Australia to maintaining security, stability, and cooperation on global and regional fronts.
