On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting with senior security officials in Delhi to assess the worsening security situation in Manipur. Fresh violence had erupted in the state following the discovery of six bodies, including three women and children, allegedly kidnapped and killed by militants in Jiribam. The violence led to a growing wave of protests, and authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in response.
The meeting focused on reviewing the security situation, and Shah is set to hold a more detailed review meeting on Monday at North Block in Delhi. This comes after the latest round of violence, which saw angry mobs setting fire to the homes of several prominent political figures in the region, including ministers and lawmakers from both the BJP and Congress.
The fresh violence occurred on Saturday night, sparking protests in response to the discovery of the bodies of the six individuals, which led to public outrage. The curfew was imposed in Jiribam following the unrest, and security forces were deployed to manage the situation. However, protests continued to escalate across the state.
Mobs set fire to the houses of multiple state ministers and MLAs, including BJP leaders Govindas Konthoujam (PWD Minister), Y Radheshyam (BJP MLA from Hiyanglam), Paonam Brojen (BJP MLA from Wangjing Tentha), and Thokchom Lokeshwar (Congress MLA from Khundrakpam). The homes of these political figures were partially destroyed, but none of the lawmakers or their families were present at the time.
The violence was a direct response to the killing of the six civilians, and protesters were angered by the apparent involvement of militants. This prompted clashes with security forces as protests intensified throughout the night.

In a separate incident, protesters attempted to storm the residence of Manipur's Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, in Luwangshangbam, Imphal East. However, security forces, including Assam Rifles and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, responded by firing tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Despite these efforts, protesters managed to block the roads leading to the CM's residence, setting fire to tyres and placing iron rods across streets to prevent movement.
The security forces were able to stop the protesters just 100-200 meters from the CM’s home, but the protests showed no signs of stopping. The situation in the region remains tense, with protests continuing to disrupt daily life and increasing concerns over the safety of civilians and political leaders.
In light of the escalating violence in Manipur, Amit Shah canceled his scheduled election rallies in Maharashtra. The protests and security situation in Manipur took priority, leading to the home minister’s return to Delhi. The discovery of the bodies and subsequent violence in the region have further intensified the situation, and Shah is focusing on finding solutions to restore peace and stability.
The violence has raised significant concerns among political leaders and citizens alike, with many expressing their fear about the growing unrest. The government has called for calm, while law enforcement agencies continue to work on managing the protests and restoring order.
The rising violence in Manipur has also sparked reactions from neighboring states. In Mizoram, political parties have condemned the incidents of violence, particularly those involving the deaths of civilians. The ruling Zoram Peoples Movement in Mizoram expressed concern over the situation in Manipur, with state officials calling for peaceful dialogue rather than violent confrontation.
Lalthansanga, Mizoram's forest and environment minister, expressed his disappointment at the violence, urging for a peaceful resolution through discussions. The Mizo National Front (MNF), a prominent political party in Mizoram, also expressed solidarity with the people affected by the violence. The MNF posted on its official social media account, emphasizing the importance of unity and standing together to protect the dignity and identity of their people.
The increasing unrest in Manipur has had ripple effects on the surrounding regions, especially in Mizoram, where the Hmar community, a group with ties to both Mizoram and Manipur, has been affected by the violence. As tensions mount, there are growing calls for the resolution of issues in Manipur through peaceful means, with many hoping that further escalation can be avoided.
As the situation in Manipur remains volatile, efforts to address the security concerns and restore peace continue. Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s involvement in the matter highlights the seriousness with which the government is treating the violence in the region. However, the ongoing protests, curfew, and clashes between protesters and security forces show that the path to peace may be long and difficult.
With political figures and citizens calling for dialogue and nonviolent solutions, there is hope that the crisis in Manipur can be addressed before further harm is done. The situation is being closely monitored, and government officials are determined to find ways to de-escalate the violence and bring an end to the unrest.
