Two MPs have clashed over how to address the ongoing violence in Manipur. Mizoram MP K Vanlalvena suggested separating the administration for the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, calling the divide “very wide.” Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, however, criticized this idea, warning Vanlalvena not to interfere in Manipur’s issues. Sanajaoba wrote on X, “Don’t cross the line… Please focus on your state’s issues.”

Vanlalvena, a leader of the Mizo National Front (MNF), a BJP ally, has also called for President’s Rule in Manipur. He believes it is essential to stabilize the region and demarcate lands for the Meitei and tribal communities. According to him, the ethnic conflict has created a situation where the hill tribes and valley residents can no longer visit each other’s territories safely. He emphasized that separate administrative units could offer a lasting solution to the violence.

Ongoing violence and security measures

The ethnic violence in Manipur began in May 2023 and has since claimed over 250 lives. The latest unrest erupted after armed individuals killed two Meitei men and abducted six women and children, who were later found dead. These incidents have deepened tensions between the communities.

The Kuki-Zo people of Manipur share cultural ties with Mizos in Mizoram, adding another layer of complexity to the issue. As the violence continues, the central government has deployed an additional 10,000 soldiers to Manipur, increasing the total security presence to 288 companies. This expansion aims to restore peace and provide safety in the conflict-hit state.

Despite these efforts, the divide between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities remains a significant challenge. Proposals like Vanlalvena’s have sparked debates on how to balance immediate security needs with long-term administrative solutions, as leaders seek ways to bring peace to the troubled region.
