Chennai will face power cuts on November 27 and 28, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., due to maintenance work. The electricity supply might resume earlier if the work is completed. This comes as heavy rains, caused by a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, have already disrupted life in the city. The depression may develop into Cyclone Fengal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Areas affected by the power cut on Wednesday include North Terminal Road, TH Road Part, Ashok Nagar, Desiyan Nagar, and Fishing Harbour, among others. On Thursday, neighborhoods such as MRC Nagar, Foreshore Estate, Gandhi Nagar, and Santhome High Road will experience outages.

Rains and cyclone preparations

Heavy rainfall hit Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, with more rain expected over the next three days. The IMD predicts very heavy rainfall in Chennai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and other districts on November 27, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall in some places. November 28 will also see heavy rainfall in several areas, followed by milder rains on November 29.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin chaired a high-level meeting to review cyclone preparedness. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, along with state disaster units, have been deployed in key districts, including Chennai, Nagapattinam, and Thanjavur. A total of 17 teams are actively stationed to handle any emergencies.

Traffic was severely affected in Chennai due to waterlogging on main roads, including OMR Road. The rain also delayed seven flights. Authorities declared holidays for schools in Chennai, Chengelpet, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai due to the weather conditions.

IMD's bulletin mentioned that the deep depression is likely to strengthen into Cyclone Fengal on November 27. It will move north-northwest, skirting the Sri Lankan coast before approaching Tamil Nadu. Citizens are advised to remain alert and follow updates from authorities.
