The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has released its second list of candidates for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, bringing significant changes to its lineup. One of the most notable moves is the shift of senior leader Manish Sisodia, the former deputy chief minister, from the Patparganj constituency to Jangpura.

Educator Avadh Ojha, a recent addition to AAP, will contest from Patparganj, a seat held by Sisodia since 2013. Ojha’s candidacy marks a strategic change for the party as Sisodia prepares to contest from a new constituency.

Changes in key Constituencies

Sisodia, who enjoyed major victories in 2013 and 2015 but won narrowly in 2020, will now focus on Jangpura. Similarly, another prominent leader, Rakhi Bidlan, currently the deputy speaker in the Delhi Assembly, has been shifted from Mangolpuri to Madipur. Mangolpuri will now see Rakesh Jatav Dharamrakshak as the AAP candidate.

The new list also includes several fresh faces and notable candidates. Among them are Dinesh Bhardwaj (Narela), Surender Pal Singh Bittu (Timarpur), Mukesh Goel (Adarsh Nagar), Jasbir Karala (Mundka), and Pradeep Mittal (Rohini). Other candidates include Purandeep Singh Sawhney (Chandni Chowk), Parvesh Ratan (Patel Nagar), Pravin Kumar (Janakpuri), and Surender Bharadwaj (Bijaswan).

Two high-profile new entrants to AAP, Jitender Singh Shunty and Parvesh Ratan, both formerly associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will represent Shahdara and Patel Nagar, respectively.

Looking ahead to the polls

The Delhi assembly elections are expected to take place in February. AAP has been in power in Delhi since 2013, except for a brief period of President’s rule in 2014–2015. The party is now gearing up for another term, aiming to maintain its dominance against the BJP, which currently holds eight seats in the 70-seat assembly.

With these new candidates, AAP is strategically positioning itself for a strong performance in the elections. The changes reflect the party’s efforts to adapt to evolving political dynamics and maintain its hold on Delhi's political landscape.
