A tragic accident in Mumbai’s Kurla West has left six people dead and 49 injured after a Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) bus lost control. The incident occurred on Monday night along SG Barve Marg. The bus, on its way to Andheri, veered off course, colliding with pedestrians and vehicles over a stretch of 100 meters before coming to a halt at the RCC column of the Solomon Building.

The impact was severe, damaging 30-40 vehicles and injuring many. Three individuals were declared dead on arrival at Bhabha Hospital. By Tuesday morning, the death toll had risen to six, according to civic officials.

Cause of the accident under investigation

Authorities believe the accident happened after the driver, Sanjay More, lost control of the vehicle, causing the bus to accelerate uncontrollably. The transport body stated that initial reports suggest the driver could not manage the wheels, leading to the bus crashing through pedestrians, vehicles, and even the compound wall of a residential society, Buddha Colony.

The bus, a 12-meter-long electric vehicle leased from Olectra Greentech, had been plying on route A322 from Kurla Station to Sakinaka. Following the crash, the Mumbai Police shut down SG Barve Marg to manage traffic and ensure safety. Alternative routes were introduced for buses traveling to Kurla Station.

Quick rescue efforts

Rescue teams quickly reached the scene, providing assistance and transporting injured individuals to nearby hospitals. Authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the incident to prevent future tragedies.

This unfortunate event underscores the need for enhanced safety measures, especially for large vehicles operating in busy urban areas like Mumbai.
